HISTORY OF THE PAN AMERICAN SOCIETY RETINA AND VITREO

The Pan-American Retinal and Vitreous Society (SPRV) was born during the XXIV Pan-American Ophthalmology Association (PAAO) Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico (March 28-April 1, 2003). A group of members of the Latin American Group Angiography, Laser and Vitreoretinal Surgery (GLADAOF) and the PAAO Board of Directors decided to create the GLADAOF SPRV as an affiliated company with the APAO subspecialty.

LATIN AMERICAN AND LASER ANGIOGRAPHY GROUP IN OPHTHALMOLOGY (GLADAOF)

(Version of Darío Fuenmayor Rivera, July of 2006, updated until February of 2018 by Dr. Fernando Arevalo).

The year 1975 was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a course on the angio-olography of Fluorescein, coordinated by Dr. Arturo Alezzandrini, pioneer of this exploration in Latin America. At the initiative of Dr. Alezzandrini, the idea of forming a group with those who at the time dedicated themselves to the study of Angiography of Fluorescein. Drs. Dario Fuenmayor and Alfonso Garmendia (Venezuela), Dr. Pedro Saenz (Peru) and Suel Abujamra (Brazil) agreed and decided to maintain contact and provide ideas for the formation of this group. Dr. Carlos Desio from Argentina joined this discussion and was always present.

Always with the enthusiasm of Arturo, every time we were in an ophthalmological event, we kept the original idea. This raises the proposal to call the group: South American Council of Angiofluoresceinografía (COSADA), inspired at that moment by the Latin American Council of Strabismus (CLADE). Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to the Latin American Association of Angiofluoresceinography (ALADA), with a Promoter Council. The Council drafted a document which emphasized that it was "a scientific entity that should be founded to promote the improvement, dissemination and application of all the knowledge and techniques related to this ophthalmological diagnosis (AFG)." "The Association is an autonomous entity which in due course may join the American Association of Ophthalmology and is headed by an Executive Committee and a Secretary General, its headquarters shall be the legal domicile, while the permanent secretariat corresponds to the country of origin of the Secretary- General ". "The Association's meeting will be held in Caracas (Venezuela) at the end of 1977 and before the Venezuelan Congress of Ophthalmology, in which the Rules of Procedure will be discussed and the First Executive Committee elected."

Near the II Venezuelan Congress of Ophthalmology, held at the Hotel Macuto Sheraton (Caraballeda, Venezuela), the name was changed to the Latin American Group of Angiofluoresceinographists (GLADA). This institution entered into force on Sunday, November 20, 1977, at 8:05 am, taking advantage of the conclusion of the Pre-Conference Course: "Fluoresceinography Angio" Anzoategui-Zulia Hall (mezzanine) Hotel Macuto Sheraton, coordinated by Dr. Darío Fuenmayor and Dr. Alfonso Garmendia. This course was attended by foreigners (Dr. Arturo Alezzandrini and Dr. Jorge Mosquera), Venezuelan ophthalmologists (Dr. Sonia de Maza, Dr. Maritza de Alzaibar, Dr. Gonzalez Urbaneja Ibrahim and Dr. Guillermo Pereira). This event led to the consolidation of the group and can be considered as the date of its formal beginning.

Since we made AFG (or FRG), also used the laser in the treatment of diseases of the retina, it was decided to change once again the name of the Latin American Group of Ocular Angiography and photocoagulation in ophthalmology (GLADAOF).

On the occasion of the III Venezuelan Congress of Ophthalmology, the American Symposium First Latin Angiofluoresceinografía, held as a pre-congress, activity on the topic: Angiofluoresceinography of the optic disc. Saturday, November 21, 1981, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Anzoátegui-Zulia Hall. Dr. Darío Fuenmayor (Ven), Dr. Alfonso Garmendia (Ven), Dr. Jorge Mosquera (Arg), Dr. Rafael Muci-Mendoza (Ven), Dr. Piñerua Enrique (Ven) Dr. Frigerio Emilio (Arg), Dr. Arturo Alezzandrini (Arg), Dr. Pedro Saenz (Peru), Dr. Ibrahim Gonzalez U. (Ven), Dr. Ramiro Almeida (ECU) and Dr. Alejandro Dal K. (Mex).

In the days of the Congress, the idea given by Arturo, would be to hold independent meetings of other events, and that is how he decided to do with the name of Forum, every 2 years and went to do the 1st GLADAOF Forum in Buenos Aires, Argentina , from October 24 to 26, 1984.
